Faithfulness Through the Years

It started with a desire to share Jesus with her classmates. Ate Nanie had no idea how to witness, but she felt a growing fire within her heart. Entering the University of the Philippines–Diliman, she joined the State Varsity Christian Fellowship (SVCF). There, she witnessed how her friends became hopeless amidst the country’s political turmoil. While many of them saw communism as the only resort for change, Ate Nanie knew the real answer was Christ. This stirred her heart, and she resolved to seek training she needed to lead her peers and others on campus.

With her parents’ support, she joined Kawayan Camp (KC) in 1970 in Murcia, Negros Occidental. Decades later, the exhilarating experiences she had at the camp remained vivid. But the expositions on the book of Daniel sharply stood out, a teaching that “became like fire in [her] bones,” as she describes. Relating Daniel’s faithfulness to God in an unbelieving nation to her own campus life made her realize that God is sovereign and in control of things “no matter how [it] appeared to His children.”

Returning to UP, Ate Nanie and other SVCFers effectively applied their camp training. Balancing academic responsibilities, they trained evangelists and Bible study leaders. They led one-on-one evangelism and prayer meetings to minister to over a hundred seekers in their fellowship. “I cannot underestimate how God used the month-long KC experience to mature us not just in faith but also in the nitty-gritty issues of time management, training others, and facing even the opposition from the families of some of us,” she recalls.

It was also at KC that Ate Nanie realized that “the best way [she] could serve God was to invest in the work of IVCF after [she] graduated.” Two years after, she entered staff work and served for seven years in IVCF. Today, married and living on the other side of the world, Ate Nanie continues to be a faithful partner in the ministry, supporting staff and Kawayan Camp.

The KC only lasted for a month but it seeded a lifelong maturity within her. That one month blossomed into fifty-six years of generosity—and this legacy continues. Reflecting on her experiences, Ate Nanie shared, “Only He knows how He blessed our meager efforts in the lives of new believers and stronger disciples.”
