IVCF Cebu Joins ELECTION 101

“Your Vote Counts” was the beckoning theme of the plenary-forum that the graduates’ department of InterVarsity Cebu hosted last February 1, 2010. The event was also a foundational lesson for any Christian’s responsibility in installing a public servant, his/her considerations in choosing a candidate, and what to watch out for in the historical automated elections come May 10. Both students and graduates attended it. It was held in Central Evangelical Free Church.
The speaker, Ms. Reylynne Dela Paz, herself an IVCF graduate from Metro Manila and a staunch advocate of anti-corruption in the government, had effectively communicated to the attendees the significant role and impact of a person’s vote in making positive changes for the nation. Dela Paz shared her own reflection on why she still needs to vote despite having been disillusioned with the abuse of power done by some public officials.
As a Christian, Dela Paz said it is important for her to engage in the affairs of the state, following the example of the Lord Jesus, when he submitted himself to earthly governance during his time. The Christians can also make real transformations in a nation even by simply acting out their respective roles, especially, during election time. Being transformed persons by the grace of God, Christians are also in the right position to spearhead responsible governance, the supposed highest human authority in the land. In essence, if one does not cast his vote, he also has no right to complain or go against irregularities in the government, because he did not do his part in what could have been the achieved positive change strengthened by his vote.
A question-and-answer portion was conducted after the plenary session, and there were many issues raised. Among them are the separation of the church and state, the strengths and downsides of the current presidential candidates, and the practical things that could be undertaken to help ensure an honest and clean election.
The session ended with the group interceding for the Philippines, the current leaders, and the upcoming elections, that with God’s Sovereignty, Christians can faithfully impact their nation, beginning with a vote. Yes, your vote STRONGLY counts.
