Smiles everywhere (Celebration)

December ’09 came with excitement for the fast approaching National Conference ’09. It was my first ever National Conference in IVCF. We went to Manila on the 16th of December, eleven days ahead of the NC, which started on a later date, December 27, 2009. This gave us ample time to plan and to familiarize our role. I was assigned on physical arrangement committee. How I wish there were more, other than myself, Raff and Edcyl!

Seeing old friends and people I know in IVCF and meeting students gave me additional excitement to perform my tasks. The simple “Thank You” and smiles all around were like an energy drink that brought additional boost of energy. Everyone seemed to enjoy the gathering. Yet, unknown to all, I was hurting.

When it hurts the most (Enduring Alone)

Days before the conference a boil appeared on my back, right below the shoulder. This slowly grew during the conference. It caused me pain every time I raised my hand but I was able to secure some pain reliever to ease the pain. The climax of my pain happened during the last exposition session, when we needed to transfer the podium. Sharp pain pierced through the side of my chest as we carried the podium and I withdrew from the crowd. While all the others ENJOYED the message, I ENDURED the pain. Then, I realized that what I have gone through was too insignificant compared to Jesus’. He endured the cross, took its shame. This passage in Hebrews 12:2-3 encourages us to consider what Jesus has done so that we will not grow weary and lose heart.

Kuya Herman’s exposition in Paul’s letter to the Philippians during the staff conference last January 6-13 once again reminded me to consider Jesus’ attitude of humility in giving value of others interest, in willingness to suffer for the Gospel and in becoming obedient to God. This attitude was also evident in the life of the Apostle Paul on how he valued other people who partnered with him. He stood alongside them and prayed for them. Therefore, I now see that pain is part in a ministry, being willing to suffer and sacrifice when called to do so.

Enjoying Together (Staff Family)

Staff work is not only about pain and sufferings but also involves having fun together. It was my first time to visit Enchanted Kingdom when the staff family went there and we enjoyed it so much as it was all expense paid. It was really such a bonding time for us, staff workers, who only meet each other during conferences. We tried to make the most of our time there by trying the different rides, from the simple Carousel to the boomerang roller coaster called “Space Shuttle” ride.

Praying Together

As a family, let me share to you some of the things I am praying to God for, praise & pray with me!

Praise God for the financial provision coming from the people I seldom meet. It is now two months after Christmas but gifts, like watch and t-shirts, keep pouring in. Thank God for the generous ministry partners.

Please continue to pray for commitment of student leaders even as I praise God for them taking turns in handling Bible studies during the time I attended the Staff Conference.

Pray for wisdom as I continue to disciple these students and prepare them for their new assignments next school year.

I plan to start another Bible Study group in Cebu Technological University. Do pray.

I am going full time in the staff work next school year. This will greatly affect my responsibility in our local church. Pray for adjustments

Life-time partner – Someone who could share my dreams and encourage me throughout the day. Ha-ha!

RISKY BUSINESS

Dear praying friends,

How does risk look to a person who is fond of taking calculated risks? How would he face it? Would he, as he often does, take out a measuring stick and, if he finds out it’s too risky, won’t risk of taking such risk?

These are just a sample of the questions I have in mind, questions that popped up as I pondered upon the message I heard during the National Conference last December 27-30, 2009 at Development Academy of the Philippines in Tagaytay City. That message, I believe, was God’s message for me concerning the direction I will be taking in journeying with Him this year. And the message is, yes—the willingness to take risks in obedience to Him. Whoa! Isn’t that a risky business?

To me, such risk has a face of fear and uncertainty. Fear, because as I’ve just mentioned, I’m used to (and comfortable with) taking calculated risks. True to my melancholic personality, I wait for perfect or ideal conditions before I start, and risk is, well, far from that. And I’m afraid to step out into an unknown risk. It is also uncertain in a sense that I do not know what, who, where or how the risk would look like, and that for me is as comforting as lying down on a bed of nails. (What a comforting thought — ironically.)

Although there is fear and uncertainty, I am willing, by God’s grace, to face such risks—and take them. Well, I think the reason is so obvious and simple. The God who called me to do this is the same God who called Abraham to a risky migration from an already wealthy status, who called Mary to bear His Son, Jesus Christ, while facing possible humiliation and opposition, and who called Paul to take the risk to bring His message to the world. In the light of these super men and women of the Bible, I am assured that the same God who called and guided them is the same God who has called me and who will guide me, bringing into completion the work He has started in me.

Once again, may you journey with me in prayer, as we lift up before the Lord the following concerns, knowing that He’s listening to us, His children.

Please pray for wisdom and diligence in my studies, as I find it very hard after four years of being away from college.
Please pray for a sensitive heart as I continue to minister to students. I have just started one-on-one discipleship with a potential leader.

Please pray for a deeper relationship with the Lord, Jesus — always delighting in his Word.

My utmost gratitude to the Lord for your prayers.

All for the glory of Him,

“Blessed are all who take refuge in him.” Psalm 2:12b

LIFE IN THE STAFFWORK

December 2009

December always enlivens me — it’s Christmas. It is also vacation time and I anticipate spending longer time with my loved ones. This time, though, it was different because I spent my Christmas in Manila preparing for the National Conference held last December 26-30, 2009. I missed my family members but I thank the Lord because somehow He has given me another family, my IVCF family, whom I spent Christmas with. I still thank the Lord for in the absence of my biological family last Christmas, my spiritual family was there to share and celebrate the season with me. I enjoyed the food while basking in the surrounding Christmas lights. I also enjoyed the opportunity to watch the “Disney on Ice” show at the Araneta Coliseum. I thank the Lord for such treats.

The National Conference (NC) in Tagaytay City was a great way for me to face the New Year with GOD’s assurance and promise of His presence. It was a time of personal evaluation, reflection and listening to the Lord not only as an individual but also as a member of the corporate body of Christ. My prayer at that time (even until now) was that after the Lord would have spoken to me personally through HIS Word and through my interactions with people, I would be able to respond to HIM rightly in the way HE wants me to.

After NC, I, together with some other staff members went to Baguio City and Benguet Province. I got sick when we arrived there, but I thank the Lord because it was an opportunity for me to take stock of my life and to think of a lot of things that I want to do in the coming year. I enjoyed my time alone with God and also the time I spent with my fellow IVCF staff. It was also great spending time with Rachel’s family who hosted us.

The year 2009 was a yearlong of learning from the Lord. My 2009 journey taught me precious lessons in life that would always help me in my continuing walk with HIM.

January 2010

The Staff Conference is one of the events I look forward to every January. It is always an occasion to have enough time to listen and reflect on the Word of God, seek HIM earnestly and ask for clear guidance and direction especially in the coming year. Taking a closer look at my six years as a staff and reflecting on what the Lord has done in my life and in the movement, particularly, in the region, I can say that it was only with GOD’s pure grace and mercy that I was able to survive. My six years stay in Cebu is a manifestation of GOD’s goodness and faithfulness. The Lord immensely revealed HIMSELF to me in a very personal way through the everyday dealings I had with students and graduates. He continually molded my character as I studied HIS word and dealt with students and grads in the region. HE transformed me, one step at a time, to be the person HE has designed me to be. I cried a lot of times because most of them were painful, but I thank the Lord because after those trying times, I came out a better person.

The Staff Con is also a chance to listen and to be updated with what’s going on in a staff worker’s life – both in the ministry and in their personal and family lives. On the lighter side, it was also a fun time with other staff workers and I truly enjoyed their presence. Playing UNO and BLITZ with them during free time were great fun.

In every Staff Con, I always experience something new, as a staff. This year the Lord has surprised me when HE answered my simple and childhood wish to go to the Enchanted Kingdom. As a kid, I dreamt of the thrilling and breath-taking rides. Having ridden almost all the rides there was, I’d say “Dreams do come true”. This was in addition to the privilege of meeting old friends and some “stars” when I was invited to attend a local church while waiting for the wedding of a former colleague.
January was made more memorable because I had the chance to celebrate my birthday in a different way. For the first time, I experienced unforeseen events which placed me in very challenging and humbling situations. After more than a month in Luzon, it felt great being back in Cebu – back to the normal life of meeting students and graduates again. I can only thank the Lord who saw me through all these.

February 2010

After Di Fernandez’ visit in Cebu last February 5 & 6, and after my speaking assignments in different campus fellowships here in Cebu, I left for my area staff visit in Leyte last February 16-20, 2010. I met students and graduates there and spent time with some individuals who I really needed to meet and to talk to not only concerning the ministry but also about their personal lives. It was a fruitful and productive time with the IVCF people in Leyte. While I was there, I also grabbed the chance to spend the weekend to visit my family. It was a short visit after a year of not being able to see and spend time with them.

After my visit in Leyte, I will be busy again in Cebu with lots of regional concerns on hand. We will be having the RAC meeting on the 27th of this month. Simultaneous with my administrative work in the region, I will also prepare for our Staff and GT retreat planning and evaluation in March while also preparing for my Kawayan Camp responsibilities.

Please uphold me once again:

Please pray for me as I help and assist Rachel Jentapa in making the program for Kawayan Camp 2010. I will be the Head Counselor for this year’s Kawayan Camp. Pray for wisdom, guidance and sensitivity to the Lord as Rachel and I oversee the entire program of KC and as I prepare the Cabin Devotion guides, too. Pray for a fruitful time with the KC’10 counselors as I meet them regularly during KC.

Pray for discipline and good health as I prepare myself for these responsibilities.

Pray for financial provision for KC ‘10. Also for creativity in raising funds and continuous trust in the Lord.

Pray for the right students from CEV who will attend KC. Pray for parental permission, creativity in fund raising and work-for-a-cause activity.

Pray for wisdom and guidance for the Regional Advisory Council members as we meet this February 27, 2010. Pray too for financial provision, safety and protection as they travel to Cebu.

Pray for my area staff visits in Bohol and Dumaguete in March 2010

Pray for financial provision, wisdom and guidance as we prepare for the Staff & GT retreat planning and evaluation this March. Pray for safety and protection as we travel to the place the Lord will lead us to.

Pray as well for the CEV- ISCF Evangelistic camp on May 24-29, 2010. Pray for the preparation of the camp staff.

Pray for my sabbatical leave preparation.

Thank you so much for all your prayers. I would like to hear from you as well.

May the LORD bless you and keep you always!

In Him alone,

“Your Vote Counts” was the beckoning theme of the plenary-forum that the graduates’ department of InterVarsity Cebu hosted last February 1, 2010. The event was also a foundational lesson for any Christian’s responsibility in installing a public servant, his/her considerations in choosing a candidate, and what to watch out for in the historical automated elections come May 10. Both students and graduates attended it. It was held in Central Evangelical Free Church.

The speaker, Ms. Reylynne Dela Paz, herself an IVCF graduate from Metro Manila and a staunch advocate of anti-corruption in the government, had effectively communicated to the attendees the significant role and impact of a person’s vote in making positive changes for the nation. Dela Paz shared her own reflection on why she still needs to vote despite having been disillusioned with the abuse of power done by some public officials.

As a Christian, Dela Paz said it is important for her to engage in the affairs of the state, following the example of the Lord Jesus, when he submitted himself to earthly governance during his time. The Christians can also make real transformations in a nation even by simply acting out their respective roles, especially, during election time. Being transformed persons by the grace of God, Christians are also in the right position to spearhead responsible governance, the supposed highest human authority in the land. In essence, if one does not cast his vote, he also has no right to complain or go against irregularities in the government, because he did not do his part in what could have been the achieved positive change strengthened by his vote.

A question-and-answer portion was conducted after the plenary session, and there were many issues raised. Among them are the separation of the church and state, the strengths and downsides of the current presidential candidates, and the practical things that could be undertaken to help ensure an honest and clean election.

The session ended with the group interceding for the Philippines, the current leaders, and the upcoming elections, that with God’s Sovereignty, Christians can faithfully impact their nation, beginning with a vote. Yes, your vote STRONGLY counts.

We know that our God is generous. Jesus taught in Matthew 7:11 that our Father in heaven is very willing to “give good gifts to those who ask him!” And we know who Jesus Christ is. He is the Son of God who willingly gave His life for us. If we truly believe these truths, then we should be more confident to pray to God through Jesus Christ. As an exercise of faith, let me invite you now to pray for IVCF Philippines. Intercede for us again. Join us in praying for this month’s ministry concerns. Jesus is waiting to hear our requests and He is ready to answer our prayers, as He is always ready to give us fresh, living water.

International fellowship of evangelical students in Europe

Europe has a long history of sending missionaries to all nations, but is increasingly recognised as an important and needy mission field in its own right. Join us in praising God for the IFES InterAction teams who support IFES movements throughout Europe.

InterAction workers face interesting challenges. Some are sent to countries where they do not know the language. Ana, in Siena, Italy, has not let that stop her. She writes about her Italian classes, ‘I can see how it is important to be in that place and not only to be learning a language to talk with the students, but also to be given the amazing opportunity by God to speak about the gospel.

Sara in Paris, France reports that she and two others have faced the snow, hail, wind and rain to set up a bookstall outside the university. Their mission is to talk with students passing by who are either deeply engrossed in their iPods or rushing to a class. Facing the cold weather and cold shoulders isn’t easy but it’s worth doing, especially when they meet students like D, who now comes to nearly every Bible study that the GBU (the IFES movement in France) runs.

Other Interaction workers describe similar joys in the face of trials. Claudia in Berlin, Germany is sometimes disappointed that more people don’t come to events, but then receives emails such as the following: ‘I am so happy now, because I am sure that God does everything for the best. I am so glad that I have a new family here.’ Somebody else wrote: ‘At the moment I am reading the book that you gave me I’d like to discuss it with you when I come back to Berlin!’

Please pray for InterAction workers across Europe, that God will encourage them, sustain them in their ministry and give them times of refreshment.

Give thanks with us for the students whose lives are being touched by the gospel as they meet with InterAction workers and attend events. Pray for student leaders as together with staff they seek to demonstrate a love that is contagious and draws others to the God who is the source of all love.

“We all have different journeys in life but what is common is that God is with us be it in our successes or failures. He is always gracious and
faithful.”

Thirty four people (22 adults and 12 kids) attended the ACF Graduates General Assembly last January 16, 2010 at Fiesta Homes, Dasmariñas, Cavite. Packed lunch and testimonies were shared to start the fellow-hip; then, a heartwarming acquaintance game was led by ACF’s president Jun Daquioag. The ACF Highlights and Financial Report for 2008-2009 were presented to the group during the assembly.

The presence of various people was added blessings to the affair. Several first timers graced the said event: Myrna Punongbayan Auxtero, Ponch de los Santos, Joseph Reyes, Josie OcampoJeresano, Antonio Mercado and Judith Esponga. Three students, Abed Salcedo, Dwight Buyawe and Zoren Domingo, were also present; they encouraged the group by sharing their appreciation to the ACF graduates that supported them financially in camps and conferences. Praise God for the ten active members of the fellowship who are hoping to have a retreat soon.

The new set of EXECOM members were present during the assembly, they are Daniel Dineros, Antonio Mercado and Cely Mendoza; their term is from 2010-2011. The term of former EXECOM members Jun Daquioag, Jeckoy Asensi and Ariel Catignas expires on 2010

IVPM: a glimpse in 2009

IVPM Makati

Inter-Varsity Professionals Movement was blessed to have had conducted several activities in 2009. The IVPM core wanted an activity to reconnect the veterans and the new blood in IVPM. So in July 24, a grand reunion of IVPM veterans and new bloods was organized. Last August 26, Pastor Norbert Manzano talked on Christianity on the Age of Twitter–a very timely topic for this era. To help guide them for future directions, Angela Backstrom addressed the young professionals on career planning last September 25. Management of finances for God’s glory was also discussed by Dr. Ken Villanueva last October 23.

The group was also privileged to conduct activities that enabled them to share their blessings to each other. In coordination with Precious Heritage Ministries, IVPM fed and taught kids from Sta. Ana, Manila on November 14. Three days after that, November 17, IVPM Makati sponsored a film showing of A Journey Home . To celebrate Christ’s coming on earth, IVPM held its Christmas party on December 4. It was indeed a fruitful and blessed year for IVPM. To start another year filled with blessings, IVPM hosted a Missions talk facilitated by the IVCF Missions team on January 29.

To God be the glory.

ISCF: THE QUESCI

JOURNEY CONTINUES

The Inter School Christian Fellowship in Quezon City Science High school has been an established and recognized chapter. It was pioneered by Lola Edna, a dedicated alumna of the school. They regularly held Large Group Fellowships and Bible Studies which were attended by many students.

The Inter School Christian Fellowship in Quezon City Science High school has been an established and recognized chapter. It was pioneered by Lola Edna, a dedicated alumna of the school. They regularly held Large Group Fellowships and Bible Studies which were attended by many students.

Some administrative changes aiming for students to focus on their academics were implemented in June 2008 .Along with other clubs, ISCF was not recognized that school year. This change brought new challenges to the fellowship. Big group gatherings and regular meetings were limited and the fellowship started to meet outside the campus. Parent’s permits were now prepared to make sure that students were allowed to attend fellowships.

It has been almost six months since the fellowship started praying for ISCF’s accreditation in the school. Efforts such as official letters and personal dialogues were made to properly communicate with the principal regarding the accreditation issue. However, both endeavors were unsuccessful. The principal advised to send a letter of request to the school’s superintendent instead. The letter was submitted last December 6, 2009. After
the Christmas break with much prayers and petition, it was learned last January 18, 2010 that the superintendent immediately approved the letter of request two days after it was submitted. But then again, a newly appointed school principal (Dr. Amid) refused to accept the recommendation from The Quezon City Schools Superintendent Office for he claims that the last say must come from him. He proposed to send another application next school year.

Despite of this scenario, Bible studies and fellowships are regularly held every Tuesday. High hopes of QueSci being saturated by the Gospel of Jesus is still held up high. Students and their vows to the Lord serve as encouragements to keep on pursuing God’s ISCF ministry in Quezon City Science High School.

By: Marian Somera

It has been two weeks after the convention and yet I still couldn’t believe I was able to attend. To someone whose parents has always been opposed to the idea of going to camps like sibol and lcdc, it came as a shock to me that they had given their permission to attend the National Conference held at DAP tagaytay last December 27 to 30. All the speakers were blessed with wonderful messages. And all the delegates were like kindred spirits who have joined together to worship one God.

I came there knowing only a few familiar faces but I came back with many more faces to remember. Words could not express my gratitude to the people who have helped in making me attend that conference and so allow me to simply show it through my action by applying all the things I’ve learned.

To be a living gospel is not easy. To do the great commission is even a greater task. but our God is greater than all of this, and he had promised to accompany us until the end of time. So as a Christian I won’t let my weakness and fear to have control over me for Jesus has assured us, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” –Jn16:33

I have asked God for a thousand times, “What do you want me to do?” and always, with my reliance to my own understanding I come to a dead end for the answer. But God worked in many ways just to show me, just what he wanted me to do, and I discovered exactly what it was during the National Conference.

The World’s End as the Beginning

By: Jose Pedrito M. Magno
1st yr. Medicine UP-Manila

In the advent of economic crises, evolving warfare, increasing natural calamities and abrupt climate change, theologists, modern scientists and even Hollywood personalities have all conceded to the fact that our planet is no longer young. There are currently numerous theories that attempts to predict how our world will come to an end; these ranges from the mystic to the scientific. Thankfully, the Bible is not silent on this matter. So, at the university-wide ACLE (Alternative Classroom Learning Experience) held in UP Manila on December 15, 2009, SVCF-Manila provided university students an opportunity to find out
how truthfully the Bible explains the signs of the times.

Rev. Philip Tarroja, a lecturer at the International Graduate School of Leadership, elder at Capitol City Baptist Church and former National Director of WorldTeach Philippines, spoke at the event entitled “The End”. The title seemed to have easily captured the students’ interest, because slots were immediately filled on the first day of signing-up. It was overwhelming to see fifty students jam-packed inside the lecture room at Rizal Hall on the day itself. Praise God!

Before the lecture began, the participants made a concept map that shows their ideas, notions and tidbits of knowledge about the topic. Familiar terms like “four horsemen”, “the Jewish Temple” and even “Nostradamus” appeared on the board. They also listed down several questions about things that still needed clarification.

Pastor Philip’s three-hour lecture gave a thorough discussion of the topic and the questions that were listed beforehand. He first began by establishing the accuracy of Biblical prophecy with vivid illustrations that left jaws dropping. Then, using several passages mostly from the books of Daniel and Ezekiel, he drew a timeline of world events from a Biblical perspective.

“Israel is God’s timepiece”, he said, “and if the world’s existence were to be measured in a single day, and we were to check the time right now, what time do you think it would be? Are we at 9 o’clock? 12 noon? 5 o’clock? No, you’d be surprised. Because if you study carefully what the Bible says..I believe we’re at 11:55”. The timeline was then traced forward to the events that are yet to happen.

The discussion gave emphasis on concepts such as Rapture and Great Tribulation. As the speaker presented more passages from Revelations and narrated his own experiences and conversations with Jews in Israel, the students became more fascinated and concerned. The participant’s fascination provided the perfect opportunity to present the truth of the Gospel. After his lecture, Pastor Philip shared his testimony and challenged the audience with the urgency of responding to Jesus. He ended the event by leading a prayer of acceptance.

We thank God for giving us this opportunity to openly share His message of Salvation on campus. Praise God for how He has moved and continues to move in the hearts of the students. Pray for us as we follow-up the participants of that afternoon’s event this January. To God be all the glory!

Wednesday, March 3 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

AlterNATION is a movement that aims to present the Christian perspective to nation building. We are well aware of the current trends in politically-oriented movements in our current society. These movements point out the youth’s involvement in the building of our nation. We affirm this to be true, yet we are left hanging on where the youth should anchor this capability to change. AlterNATION envisions to present that the solution is through the youth’s hands, but is anchored on God and will only be attained on God’s terms.

This event was fully supported by IVCF Philippines, from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Edwin Erni, IVCF National Director Mr. Erickson Velardo, IVCF National Graduates Executive Committee Chairman Mr. Tony Litam, IVCF National Office Staff: Yvette Romero (Missions), Angela Marbella (Alumni Relations), Di Fernandez (ISCF), Dot Velardo (RDD Communications), to the IVCF Metro Manila Regional Unit Staff: Shebel Solmia (Regional Director), Reinstary Arlegui, and Rafaeil Magdaong. Graduates groups in Southern Luzon were in charge of the events: Reaching Hands (Cavite), Common Ground (Batangas), GTs & Graduates of Calapan, Mindoro, and SVCF LB Alumni Association. Individual IVCF graduates and different Graduate Team (GT) members also joined and supported the event. Students were in the forefront as well. SVCF LB chapter helped in the registration, students from Cavite were part of the worship team, and student leaders from different campus chapters presented their ministry reports. Some students even joined the business and planning time. We will share with you more details later, but for now enjoy some pictures from the event, and even watch a short video, posted in our IVCF website.

Praise God for the formation of IVCF’s 9th Regional Unit, the 4th in Luzon. The ministry of IVCF Philippines is indeed growing. Even in the midst of new, and continuing challenges, God is blessing our movement with opportunities to build His kingdom more and more. Glory to God!

It is always inspiring to work in a ministry where people of different views come together as one declaring the glory of the Sovereign King. The stories of those people from the past and of the present, allowed me to discover more of who God is. He has showed himself further and allowed me to open a box of colorful opportunities. Opportunities which I felt incapable of doing and opportunities that made me grow.

After some months of working as a staff in the region with different kind of stressors, God shifted my focus 180 degrees. He let me experience new things – my “first time opportunities”.

Let me share to you the “first time opportunities” I had with my Father and King. Some of which were just “mababaw” but those experiences kept my journey balanced.

After long years of being part of the ministry, it was my first time to join the National Conference. Beside the excitement of seeing some of my KC mates (KC2K4) after 5 years, God made me see that His presence is always with us. He proved to me His faithfulness. It should not surprise me but I did! I was amazed of His provision during the conference and even of the reconciliation and restoration of relationships. Aside from that, caring for the kids through the Child Care Committee made me realize to thank my parents of how they trained me to take care my younger siblings which I used to retaliate.

My first time to step on Tagaytay (where I wonder again, since childhood days, at the beauty of sunflower at the streets), Baguio/Benguet – during the break after NC(the astonishing fogs), and of the Enchanted Kingdom treat (thanks to the sponsor/s! ) made me praise our Creator more for being the really Great One.

“Blitz” break during the Staff Conference

Not only that, but I praise Him for for the first time I made a Quiet Time guide (at sa StaffCon pa!). The fellowship with my fellow staff made me feel the love that overflows from Above and encourages me to go on.

It was during those times also that He provided healing to my broken soul. He gave life and restored my bones which were once dry.

Indeed our God and King is always with us in this new horizon! He is forever be praised and glorified!

With all those colorful journey that I had, thank you for your prayers and support. May our joy and passion of serving through the ministry be passed on to the students.

God bless our endeavors!

Our new year started with a wonderful time at home in Baguio. Though a very short stay, we enjoyed our home and bonding time with family and friends. It was also a time for rest after the tiring, yet fulfilling, National Conference. We had a lot of good times and also had a couple of trying times, yet still experienced God’s presence.

In Good Times…

Good times.

We left for Manila last January 5. The next day was Zeik’s 12th birthday and 5th spiritual birthday. Before leaving for our staff conference in Tagaytay, we woke him up and greeted him with a cake which Dot baked and with some gifts. It was a happy time for us, thanking God for Zeik’s life . His birthday wish is a new marine aquarium, that we still have to give him after we save up for it. Then a few hours later we were off to Tagaytay for our staff conference.

After months of hard work for NC, we, together with all the staff were treated to an afternoon of fun and adventure at Enchanted Kingdom in Laguna. It was a wonderful treat for all of us. We were thrilled at the rides and faced our fears of height and speed. Dot had been shouting at the top of her lungs after few rides. Somehow the rides was freeing and frightening. Yet all of us had a different and memorable experience.

Erickson with some staff and South Luzon IV graduates

The staff conference was also a time of renewal and recommitment. Its purposes for us staff are to have rest, to plan, and to bond as a team. They were achieved harmoniously. We were also blessed with a meaningful time with some of our BOT. It had been a while since we experienced such wonderful staffcon. Erickson facilitated a lot of sessions. He also worked with key graduates in the formation of IVCF’s new Southern Luzon Regional Unit. Dot, together with Shebel, facilitated 2 sessions on Fund Raising and building relationships with our donors.

After the conference we had witnessed a wedding of a former colleague, and then later met up with some of our Baguio graduates who were already in Manila. All of them were our former IVCF students. Both of us and the boys enjoyed the reunion with these people.

Erickson preached for the first time at Sampaloc Bible Community Church on January 31, 2010. It was a wonderful opportunity to share God’s Word and the ministry of IVCF.

In Bad Times…

We got back to our office work by the third week. Most of the regional staff had gone back to their areas. Most of us here had resumed with our office work, meetings and other tasks clamoring to be accomplished.

Erickson was coming home from a meeting with student leaders when one of the lenses of his eyeglasses fell along the stairs at UP Diliman. It was chipped off and when we was putting it back he discovered that the frame was already broken. It was a daunting task driving along the busy Commonwealth Avenue at night (even bringing some of the students to their nearest jeepney rides). So the very next day, we took an emergency leave from work to buy a new eyeglasses. He needed lenses with 700 and 450 grade, but most optical shops we visited needed 3-5 days to make that kind of eyeglasses. Thankfully we found one shop that could make the glasses before the mall closes. So we just roamed around the shopping mall, window shopping as we waited for it. It was an urgent need and surprise expense.

With Ate Liza, her fiancé & her pamangkins

Since we are always away on summer, we decided to have Zeik circumcised this January. A pedia-friend (also an IV batchmate in Baguio City) recommended to have it done in her clinic in Tarlac because it is cheaper and she could check up on Jahd also. And it was also an opportunity re-connect with her and meet her fiancé. On our way to Tarlac, our car started to make frightful noises from the engine. We stopped at the nearest gas station. The car literally stopped on its own, because the engine was starting to overheat. After cooling it off for a few minutes, we hope to have it checked but no mechanic was on duty that time, so we decided to move on and just looked for auto repair shop along the way. As Erickson stepped on the gas, the sound became louder, like a helicopter. The sound heightened our stress level and we could only breathed prayers asking God for mercy not to let the car break down in unpopulated areas. With an “injured” car, we were able to reach the clinic in Tarlac, on time for Zeik’s circumcision schedule. After bringing the car to a shop near the clinic, we were told that the engine had a major break down and it was unsafe to drive it. Thinking that the car could be fixed the next day, we stayed overnight in Tarlac for Zeik’s sake and “Surprise,” our car. By morning, we the mechanic said that it will take about a week to repair it, with lots of engine parts to be replaced. The car is still in Tarlac, hoping to be ready by next week. We are so thankful for friends like Ate Doc Liza, who accommodated us, gave free immunizations and cheap circumcision cost; for Eljay and Xai (both former students of ours and now like our older children ) who fetched us. And for many added blessings in spite of these not-so-delightful surprises.

On Our Knees…

Rejoice with us for how the Lord manifests His presence and sovereignty over our circumstances. We may have “un pleasant surprises” or “interruptions” but we are still thankful for how these draw us closer to the Lord. We may even have added and untimely expenses but, we know that the Lord will provide— as He always has.

Pray for our activities lined up this February: Erickson’s overnight retreat with IVCF Board Of Trustees on the 5th & 6th. Our Love Courtship Marriage talk with Bicol grads in Manila on the 14th; Ministry presentation and talk at Presbyterian Seminary in Dasmarinas, Cavite on the 18th; Southern Luzon Regional Fellowship & Prayer Day on the 20th.

Pray for Zeik’s fast recovery and healing from his obedience to Genesis 17:10. He enjoys his rest, but gets bored from not doing anything else.

Pray for Jahd’s appetite and good health. He had lost weight from our conferences due to not eating well, because both of us were so busy to wait for him to finish his meals.:(

At the height of our stress, we definitely reiterated that “hindi man kami mayaman sa maraming bagay pero mayaman kami sa mga kaibigan at sa ibang biyaya ng Diyos”.

Your friendship, prayer, love and support fuel us up, especially in our “bad times.” Knowing that you are always alongside us encourages us in a big way. Bad times do not seem to be bad at all but opportunities to be loved, helped and cared for. We praise the Lord for you.

In His grace,
