Intermediate Staff Training, Bangkok

Posted by admin On March - 30 - 2009

Lala Pla and Shebel Solmia attended the East Asia Intermediate Staff Training last February 21-27, 2009 held in Bangkok, Thailand.

Again thank God for Cebu Pacific’s very low fares. IFES also gave scholarship and travel subsidy to one staff. The theme, “Keeping Vibrant, Leaving Legacies” is a very appropriate one for intermediate staff. Our two delegates found the training very relevant and inspiring. I think it is really good for them as
they are being prepared for greater responsibilities in the movement. I served as a resource person. I handled sessions on Singleness, Managing Conflicts and Burnout. I was refreshed, too, as I listened to the other speakers and as I interacted with the participants.

The language barrier was transcended by our sense of belonging to one big family. I am sure this training made an impact to our two staff.

“Transitions”, Graduating Students Retreat

Posted by admin On March - 30 - 2009

IVCF MMRU in partnership with IVPM Makati hosted an overnight retreat for a handful of IVCF graduating students last March 20-21, 2009 at the Touch of Glory Prayer Mountain in Antipolo City. The retreat theme was “Transitions” designed to help facilitate the many “changes” the students are bound to go through as they move on from university life to marketplace living.

Featured topics were on The Theology of Work (Work and Me), Spirituality in the Fastlane, and pointers on how to put one’s “Best Foot Forward” in job applications. Supportive graduates from IVPM Makati and IVCF alumni Engr. Noel and Dr. Julie Querijero came as resource speakers and graciously shared their own marketplace stories to our small group of young and promising IVCF graduating students. Mixed feelings of fear and hope as they prepare to step into the world of work, and sadness over having to leave behind the warmth and security of their campus fellowships were evident in the students’ stories and testimonies. The retreat culminated with the assurance that the God who faithfully sustained and blessed them as students is the same Lord who goes before them and who is with them as they move on as soon-to-be graduates. Mabuhay!

Makati Science High School (MSHS) Retreat

Posted by admin On March - 30 - 2009

Inter-School Christian Fellowship (ISCF) was privileged to conduct a retreat for the graduating class of Makati Science High School (MSHS) last March 23. One-hundred and one students participated in the half-day retreat that featured a series of team games that illustrated truths about following Christ. After the students had enjoyed the race, the facilitators led them in sharing what they had learned. Pastor Jamil Tagay, a former Muslim who now follows Christ, gave the future college students some tips in succeeding in life. He concluded by challenging them to follow Christ. The retreat concluded in a response of praise and worship led by some of the Christian students.

The Seniors’ Retreat was an initiative of some MSHS Christian parents who desired that their children and their classmates would experience a Christian retreat before they graduate. For a long time, they have had a burden to see a Christian outreach in MSHS. They are praying that even next year ISCF may be able to minister in MSHS on a more regular basis through Bible studies, retreats and special programs.

Praise God for this opportunity of service given to ISCF. Praise God for the burden and initiative of the MSHS parents. Praise God as well for the IVCF graduates Bong Blancaflor (PNU), Blair Aguil (former staff), Dave Salva (KC’98) and Phoebe Guerra (UP Diliman) who lent their time and skills to assist the IVCF staff in conducting the retreat.

Third Ministry Update

3rd_nd_report_cover

Dear IVCF Family and Friends,

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I am excited to present to you our Third Ministry Update in 3 parts.  First, “see” God’s faithful work in the lives of our people captured through these moving pictures.  Then, be inspired as you “listen” to the voices of people who experienced God’s presence and grace as you read their testimonies.  Finally, “count” our blessing of growth reflected in our statistical reports.  Praise the Lord for His mighty works in IVCF Philippines.

Your servant-leader in Christ,

Erickson M. Velardo
National Director

I. Third Ministry Update in Pictures

This is the first part of the Third Ministry Update in “living colors” with various pictures that paint a thousand words.  Witness what God has done in the lives of students and graduates through the ministry of IVCF Philippines.  These visualize our activities and programs.  After all, our aim is to disciple students and graduates for Christ in all areas of life and equip them to serve their campuses, churches, and communities.

II. Third Ministry Update in Words

Personal testimonies have powerfully proclaimed God’s work through IVCF Philippines. Hence, I share with you the second part of our Third Ministry Update in words. I enjoin you to read these stories which will move you to praise God. Feel the joy of our people testifying how God has worked in their lives. Likewise, remember how you felt this way before. Thank God for manifesting His presence and power in the lives of both our people and ministry.

High School Student

Isagani II R. Caasi is a first year student in Davao City National High School. He describes his memories in ISCVF meetings as awesome. He said he learned not only about the Lord Jesus Christ but also about himself. He looks forward to our meetings next school year. (Jenny Tecson, IVCF-SMRU)

College Student

I did not only live aimlessly. I also hated life–myself, my family, those around me. I also hated God for giving me life.

My journey with God started in 2005. I was then a freshie at Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT) and I neither have motivation nor ambition. Besides, I felt alone, unloved, unwanted, uncared for and unhappy. A former high school classmate persistently invited me to their IVCF meetings in campus, but I also presistently refused. After a few months, I succumed to the invitation.

Initially, I was a misnomer. I laughed at them. They seemed fools in their singing and dancing. Eventually, I came to know the Lord, learned about His love, and had my questions gradually answered. Thus, I always looked forward to the Tuesday and Thursday IVCF meetings. My longing for God intensified as I consistently attended the Bible studies.

In LCDC 2006, I learned that I am called to proclaim the Good News, so I eventually joined an evangelical church, where I now serve. In 2007, I also joined Kawayan Camp, which I consider a breakthrough in my Christian life as it increased my passion for the Lord.

IVCF has remarkably influenced me. It has not only trained but also nurtured me to be a servant-leader. These have all helped me as the internal vice president of the IVCF chapter in our campus.

I also thank God for allowing me to witness His works in IVCF. One of these is seeing students who are transformed by the Lord.

Please pray with and for me. I plan to have a month-long vacation and retreat with my family. I will also be looking for a job so that I can support the ministry. I want to serve Him in all aspects of my life so that His will be done in me.

To Him be all the glory!!!

God intervenes in each meeting I have with first year students. One particular occasion was when we had a topic on family. I thought it is boring. Besides, because I was new to them, I thought that they would find it awkward to discuss something personal.

For that meeting, I prepared incomplete statements (completion guides) which they had to fill in. These all had to do with family issues. Initially, it was an ordinary meeting seasoned with laughing and murmuring.

However, Arvy’s turn made it so memorable. He was then an invitee and one who seems a bully. He always laughs and teases his classmates. I can no longer remember what he wrote in the completion guide. As he spoke, I knew that God had been speaking and revealing Himself to him head on. Apparently, the rest shared their struggles with me. After all, that is what Small Groups are for—a venue of enabling and encouraging each other.

Since then, Arvy, has faithfully attended our weekly meetings. Initially, I did not expect him to be that eager and serious. I realized that our small group is God’s and He chooses those who constitute it.

What makes Arvy hooked up to our small group? It is not because of the games, songs, friendship, sharing, laughter and tears but because of God Himself.

III. Third Ministry Update in Numbers

The following graphical data show the involvement of our students, graduates, individuals and partners in our five flagship programs: evangelism, discipleship, mission, leadership and nurturing the movement.  These quantitative data all the more affirms that He is indeed at work in this ministry.  His name be praised!

Official Statement of the IVCF Board of Trustees Regarding the General Guidelines for all IVCF Graduates and Affiliate Ministries

MEMO from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Date: February 25, 2009

For some time now there have been efforts from certain quarters to purportedly organize IVCF groups and to incorporate a national IVPM.  Many have thought that this is a move approved and sanctioned by the BOT. This has resulted in not a few confusions and misunderstandings.  This memorandum is issued to once and for all clarify the official position of IVCF with regard to this matter.

  1. According to the organizational structure approved by the BOT and presented to the IVCF corporation members in the last annual corporation meeting, there is only one IVCF organization with one Board of Trustees elected by the IVCF corporation members.  The IVCF organization has three main divisions: student ministry, graduate ministry and NCF ministry.  The student ministry is headed by the National Director, the graduate ministry by the chairperson of the National Executive Committee of IVPM (at the present it recognizes Atty. Jordan Reyes), and the NCF by the chairperson of the NCF National Executive Committee (at present, Ms. Phebe Pendon).  The three heads comprise the National Coordinating Council with the National Director as chair.
  2. The Graduate Ministry or Ministries is composed of IVCF alumni groups, local IVPM groups and other sectoral groups such as teachers, lawyers, etc. For these groups to be officially recognized as part of the national IVCF umbrella, they must apply for affiliation with the National Office (there is a separate guideline for affiliation).  Only those who have applied, complied with the requirements and are subsequently approved by the BOT will be recognized as official IVCF groups or affiliates.
  3. The main role of these graduate groups is support to the student ministry and mutual support and encouragement to like-minded graduates to fulfill the group’s objectives. Whenever members of these groups do student work, they do it under the umbrella of the Graduate Team Ministry and under the supervision of the IVCF regional director in the area. If there is no GT ministry or staffworker in the area, they do student work only in proper coordination with official IVCF representatives such as the regional director or the national director. ANY PERSON OR PERSONS PURPORTEDLY DOING IVCF STUDENT WORK WITHOUT PROPER COORDINATION WITH AND APPROVAL BY THE BOT THROUGH ITS OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO DO IVCF WORK AND THE RESULTING GROUPS WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED AS IVCF GROUPS UNLESS AND UNTIL THEY AFFILIATE WITH IVCF.
  4. We do not seek to hinder any person or group to do student ministry. They are free to do what they like. But we will recognize as IVCF groups only those that are done by properly accredited or affiliated parties or groups.
  5. We neither want to stop persons or groups who want to organize a national graduates group or national IVPM.  But we will recognize only a national IVPM Executive Committee composed of representatives from local IVPM groups affiliated with IVCF. The BOT has not approved of any national IVPM to register with SEC but only local IVPM groups may do so.  Any national organization will only be coordinative in nature, i.e., only as a national executive committee or council, and not as a parallel organization with IVCF. The organization must also be bottom up. That is, the local groups, not individuals, decide to become part of a national IVPM and their representatives elected to the executive council.  This is in consonance with our ethos that each IVCF group or chapter is autonomous.

The IVCF Board makes a categorical statement informing the IVCF Body that there is no Board approval or existing Board Resolution authorizing the creation of the National IVPM.

What the IVCF Board approved and authorized is the creation of a National IVPM Executive Committee to oversee the Graduates Ministries and the National Coordinating Council which would supervise and coordinate the activities and programs of the Student Ministry, the NCF, and the Graduates Ministries.

For the information of everyone, the following are the relevant Board Resolutions which govern Graduate and Affiliate Ministries

I. Official Statement of the IVCF Board of Trustees Regarding the Cagayan Valley Ministry:

The IVCF Philippines Board does not recognize nor sanction as a ministry of the IVCF Phils, the Cagayan Valley Ministry also known as the IVPM Cagayan Valley. The premises by which the creation of the Cagayan Valley Ministry as approved previously by the Board no longer hold, to wit:

  • Mr. Nicodemo “Nico” Estrada, the former IVCF Staff Worker assigned and commissioned to undertake and supervise the Cagayan Valley Ministry has already resigned from the IVCF effective September 30, 2007.
  • The Cagayan Valley Ministry does not recognize the authority and governance of the IVCF National Office nor of the IVCF Board; and
  • That despite repeated requests and calls for affiliation, the proponents of the Cagayan Valley Ministry refuse to affiliate with IVCF.

Therefore, any activities, programs and/or representations made by IVPM Cagayan Valley for and in behalf of IVCF in the Philippines and abroad are not SANCTIONED nor AUTHORIZED by IVCF Philippines.

Praise & Prayer – March 2009

Posted by admin On March - 5 - 2009

National Office

Dear IVCF Family and Friends,

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ!

The last quarter of the school year 2008-2009 is nearing its end, and yet we still have so many things that we need to do: last campus chapter visits, preparations for summer camps, last quarter and annual reports, and next school year’s annual plan and budget.

Pray for the staffworkers, GT volunteers, and student leaders for all their work. May Paul’s encouragement in 1 Corinthians 15:58 be our motivation: “Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

Thank you for praying for IVCF Philippines for the past months. Indeed your prayers helped us. God answered last month’s prayer requests. A couple of graduates expressed willingness to join the staff. The Balikatan Board had a successful meeting. Our own IVCF Board of Trustees also had a productive meeting last February 25. We give thanks to God for answers to prayers. In the next pages, you can read more of our praises and our new prayer requests from our regional units.

I invite you to pray for us once more. Again, one of our basic needs is financial support. God’s graciousness sustained us at the beginning of 2009. However, last month’s giving was low. The continued economic global economic crisis is affecting us all. This month, if there is no increase in the giving for our general funds, we will have difficulty releasing staff salaries on time. On top of that, our national summer camps (and regional camps) need subsidy so our students and graduates could afford the fees and attend these important discipleship and leadership training events.

So how do I ask our people to give for IVCF’s needs when many are financially struggling themselves? I pray that God would raise up more people who will follow the example of the Macedonian churches in 2 Corinthians 8:1-3, “And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.”

So in faith, I present to you our immediate financial needs:
General Fund/Staff Support (March): about Php 600,000.00
Kawayan Camp Subsidy (April): about Php 150,000.00
GT Conference (May): about Php 140,000.00
Operation Samaria (May): about Php 30,000.00

The total subsidy needed is almost 1 million pesos. Pray for people to be informed about this and may God move hearts again.

May people respond, give their support, and share this prayer request with others. May God bless us all.

In Christ,
Erickson Velardo
National Director

Caraga Regional Unit

Praise the Lord for the success of the Christian Boy-girl relationship seminar, with the theme: QUEST for TRUE LOVE, conducted last February 10, 2009 at Audio-Visual room, ASSCAT, Agusan del Sur. 78 students came, with former staff Jether Yares as speaker.

Praise the Lord for the successful concert at La Paz, Agusan del Sur. It was a joint project by the ISCF and Christian Life Friendship Club (CLFC). The school authorities favored them by allowing all the students to attend the concert. This is indeed God’s favor! The concert theme was GUGMANG TINUOD (true love).

It is the tradition of the Caraga grads to give a yearly TRIBUTE to the graduating IVCF students who faithfully served God in IVCF. It is our hope that this year’s theme : Fulfilling our Destiny will challenge and encourage our young graduates to pursue God’s call and purpose in their lives- whatever it takes. Please pray with us as we prepare for this event. Pray for good venue, fair weather, finances, and for the preparation of our speakers and delegates.
